The NSW Natural Resource Atlas is a portal to a range of specific websites, maps and data that together make up
the NSW Natural Resources & Planning Spatial Data Infrastructure (NRP-SDI). The following standards are used in the NRAtlas and other parts of the NRP-SDI,
or were recommended by the Community Access to Natural Resources Information (CANRI) Program for future SDI use.
| Standard | Description | Authority | Status in NRP-SDI | Deployment comment |
| Comma Separated Values (CSV) | | Microsoft | Operational | Where supported bv the data server, point features within a given map extent may be downloaded in CSV format. |
| Geography Markup Language (GML) | An XML encoding for the transport and storage of geographic information, including both the spatial and non-spatial properties of geographic features. | OGC | Development | GML is already used to provide feature info for Web Map Services, but its use will grow with the deployment of Web Feature Services. |
| MapInfo transfer format (MID/MIF) | | Mapinfo | Operational | Some datasets are available for download in Mapinfo transfer format. |
| Shapefiles | | ESRI | Operational | Some datasets are available for download in shapefile format. |

| Gazetteer of New South Wales Catchment Management Authorities (NSW CMAs) | Names and geographic coordinates (minimum bounding rectangles) of New South Wales Catchment Management Authorities. | DNR | Operational | CMA minimum bounding rectangles can be used to set the map extent in the NRAtlas 'Find a place' tab. |
| Gazetteer of New South Wales Local Government Areas (NSW LGAs) | Names and geographic coordinates (minimum bounding rectangles) of New South Wales Local Government Areas. | Lands | Operational | LGA minimum bounding rectangles can be used to set the map extent in the NRAtlas 'Find a place' tab. |
| Gazetteer of New South Wales Towns (NSW Towns) | Names and geographic coordinates (minimum bounding rectangles) of selected major New South Wales towns. | Lands | Operational | Town minimum bounding rectangles can be used to set the map extent in the NRAtlas 'Find a place' tab. Currently hard-coded but would ideally come from an online gazetteer service provided by the the custodian. |

| Albers Equal Area (Albers) | | GA | Recommended | For maps covering continental Australia. |
| Geographic coordinates, Australian Geodetic Datum 1966 (Lat/long AGD66) | | GA | Operational | |
| Geographic coordinates, Geocentic Datum of Australia 1994 (Lat/long GDA94) | | GA | Recommended | In general use for web mapping but exaggerates horizontal distances in proportion to distance from the equator. |
| Lamberts Conic Conformal (Lambert) | | Lands | Recommended | For maps covering the state of New South Wales. |
| Map Grid of Australia (MGA) | | GA | Recommended | For maps wholly within one UTM zone (6 degrees of longitude). |

| ANZLIC Metadata Guidelines, Page 0 (ANZLIC Page 0) | Core metadata elements for data discovery and determining if a dataset is fit for a user's purpose. Sets out minimum metadata requirements for inclusion in the NRDD/ASDD. Will be replaced by a profile of ISO 19115 (which see also). | ANZLIC | Operational | |
| ANZLIC Page 1 NSW | The minimum metadata elements required to accompany transfers of spatial data so that recipients can use the data effectively. | NRIMS | Operational | |
| CANRI Service Metadata | Metadata for finding, describing and binding to web maps, spatial web services, websites, online documents and metadata. | DIMWG | Operational | |
| Common Spatial Gateway Interface (CSGI) | | SCO | Deprecated | |
| Geographic information - Metadata (ISO 19115) | Defines schema for describing geographic information and services. Details include identification, extent, quality, spatial and temporal schema, spatial reference and distribution. An ANZLIC is developing a profile for use in Australia and New Zealand. | ISO | Future | Awaiting ANZLIC profile |
| Web Map Context (WMC) | Create, store, and use "state" information from a WMS-based client application. | OGC | Future | Current version does not yet support all functions used in NRAtlas |
| Standard | Description | Authority | Status in NRP-SDI | Deployment comment |
| Catalogue Service (CAT) | A common interface that enables diverse but conformant applications to perform discovery, browse and query operations against distributed and potentially heterogeneous catalog servers. | OGC | Recommended | |
| Common Spatial Gateway Interface (CSGI) | | DIMWG | Deprecated | |
| Gazetteer Service Profile of a WFS (Gaz) | Provides web access to an authority for place names. Returns their associated feature representations. | OGC | Recommended | |
| NSW Spatial Data Infrastructure Web Map Service Profile (WMS Profile) | Technical specification for a NSW SDI-compliant Web Map Service. This would be a profile or subset of the WMS specification, in which some optional WMS capabilities become mandatory and allowable values are more tightly specified. | DIMWG | Draft | |
| Styled Layer Descriptor (SLD) | An encoding for how the Web Map Server (WMS 1.0 & 1.1) specification can be extended to allow user-defined symbolization of feature data. | OGC | Recommended | |
| Web Feature Service (WFS) | An online service that supports insert, update, delete, query and discovery operations on geographic features using HTTP as the distributed computing platform. | OGC | Development | |
| Web Map Service (WMS) | Provides three operations (GetCapabilities, GetMap and GetFeatureInfo) to support creation and display of registered and superimposed map-like views of information that come simultaneously from multiple remote and heterogeneous sources. | OGC | Operational | |
